An innovative approach to supporting language development in the early years
Staff in the nursery and reception classes all encourage the pupils’ Welsh language development during play and as they develop their different skills. This means that daily instructions for all pupils are provided through the medium of Welsh where appropriate. This approach supports pupils in both language streams to further develop their understanding of words and simple sentence patterns in Welsh effectively. During specific language activities, staff use the main language of the class, either Welsh or English, depending on the group of pupils. This approach strengthens pupils’ language understanding and encourages them to express themselves in Welsh with increasing confidence.
