Supporting young people to challenge harmful attitudes
Flintshire Youth Service responds insightfully to issues affecting young people’s relationships, identity and wellbeing. Through the Consent, Goliath and Athena projects, youth workers help young people explore complex themes such as toxic masculinity, feminism, consent, healthy relationships, LGBTQ+ issues, sexual health, mental health and online influence.Youth workers design the programmes carefully so that young people can discuss sensitive issues honestly without feeling blamed or judged. The Consent project, delivered with partners, explores sensitive issues through drama productions and presentations. The Goliath project combines discussion-based workshops with boxing or gym-based activity, giving young men a practical and engaging way to reflect on attitudes, behaviour and emotional wellbeing. The Athena project provides a supportive space for young women to explore self-esteem, confidence, relationships and identity. The programmes help young people think critically about harmful online narratives and develop more respectful attitudes towards themselves and others. A few young people have changed their behaviour, improved attendance, reduced substance misuse or asked for further individual support as a result of the work.
