Planning effective learning opportunities to prepare pupils for adult life
The school provides highly effective support for holistic character development through a range of structured programmes and learning opportunities.A well-structured PSE programme is in place throughout the school, complemented by a pastoral programme which focuses on character development known by its acronym ‘POLESTAR’ (Participation, Offer, Leadership, Environment, Service, Technology, Respect). Pupils are able to use this structure to reflect on their experiences and think deeply about their own personal development. As a result, pupils develop confidence and self-awareness over time, allowing them to take on leadership positions and to participate in a wide variety of activities which broaden their horizons. The school offers many opportunities to develop their skills and to broaden their knowledge and understanding, for example pupils participate in an art award and pupils in the sixth form have opportunities to undertake work experience and to listen to expert visiting speakers. The electives programme, also designed in-house, offers pupils a range of courses, within the school timetable which develop their knowledge, understanding and skills in a variety of areas. For example, pupils can: join the ‘Introduction to Economics’ course, opt to learn basic cookery skills; learn CV writing and basic spreadsheet skills, study mathematical modelling or physiology. These programmes complement the school’s careers education programme, which is delivered by form tutors across the school, resulting in a positive, holistic approach to careers education, university preparation and preparation for adult life.
